Craig Hunter, co-owner and mixer at RH Factor, a Burbank, California-based sound production facility, has been a long-time Genelec user and credits them as part of his workflow/business model that helps keep RH Factor on the cutting edge.
Recently the facility went through an upgrade to its Studio A, a two-person mix stage that now features a 5.1 monitoring system from Genelec, the leader in active monitoring technology for four decades. The setup includes a Genelec 1234A Smart Active Monitoring™ System for L-C-R, four 8240A Bi-Amplified Smart Active Monitors for side and surrounds and a 7073A Active Subwoofer, as well as Pro Tools® HD editors and recorder and an Avid Pro Tools | S6 control surface.
The upgrades were designed to provide high-end clients such as Netflix and Amazon the best possible sound reproduction available, and the installation was assisted by local West Hollywood-based systems integrator Audio Intervisual Design. Studio A’s picture source is HD-compatible, and all systems are tied to the in-house server system, allowing for efficient transfer of materials between remote and local locations.
“I’m thrilled that we were able to continue our long and productive relationship with the folks at Genelec by installing a front wall solution with their 1234A speakers and 7073A bass-managed subwoofer – a significant step up in both power output and low end needed for our action-based shows,” stated Craig Hunter. “Genelec has always been a first-choice monitor system for RH Factor – we’ve used both the large format analog speakers and the DSP-based monitors in all of our mixing and layback rooms.”
With a rich history in the post-production sector, RH Factor’s client list reads like a who’s-who of Hollywood, with credits that include Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, The Real O’Neals, The Guest Book, Boston Legal (for which Hunter won an EMMY) and many others. Recently RH Factor has just finished contributing their services to two high-profile series – Santa Clarita Diet for Netflix Studios and Goliath for Amazon Studios – using the monitor and console upgrades.
“Sound post-production is very much like the old chain metaphor – you’re only as strong as your weakest link,” Hunter stated. “And when sound is what you do for a living, your equipment choices mean everything. I can tell you that our clients are very satisfied with our listening environment and truly appreciate the translation to broadcast and streaming formats. Technology is meant to provide choices and expand the way we think and listen. With Genelec, I can bring the beautiful sounds of the outside world inside – and that’s pretty cool.”
