The nominees for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards<\/strong> were announced on Wednesday, November 20, and Berklee alumni and faculty<\/strong> will once again be a major presence at the awards show on Sunday, January 26, 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) nominated 28 alumni and two faculty members across 17 categories.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Who is nominated for the Grammy Awards? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the second year in a row, David \u201cSwagg R\u2019Celious\u201d Harris<\/strong>, an assistant professor in the Songwriting Department, received a nomination in the Album of the Year<\/strong> category. Harris worked as a songwriter and producer on H.E.R.\u2019s album I Used to Know Her<\/em><\/strong>. Harris and Berklee alumna Ruby Amanfu \u201898 both received nominations in the Song of the Year<\/strong> category for their work on H.E.R.\u2019s \u201cHard Place,\u201d and Harris is nominated in the Best R&B Song<\/strong> category for his work on H.E.R.\u2019s \u201cCould\u2019ve Been.\u201d Harris previously received a Grammy for Album of the Year for his work on H.E.R.\u2019s eponymous album in 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jazz musician, producer, and vocalist Esperanza Spalding B.M. \u201805<\/strong> is nominated for awards in two categories, Best Jazz Vocal Album<\/strong> and Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals<\/strong>, for her seventh studio album 12 Little Spells<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nominations mark the sixth and seventh Grammy nominations for Spalding\u2019s music career. She previously won four Grammy awards, including Best New Artist, in 2011<\/strong>, making her the first jazz artist in history to win that award. Joining Spalding in the category of Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals is alumnus and two-time Grammy nominee Geoff Keezer B.M. \u201889, for his arrangement of Sara Gazarek\u2019s \u201cJolene.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berklee alumni comprise a majority of the Best Improvised Jazz Solo category: Melissa Aldana B.M. \u201809 for \u201cElsewhere,\u201d Julian Lage B.M. \u201808 for \u201cTomorrow Is the Question,\u201d and Branford Marsalis \u201880 for \u201cThe Windup.\u201d Marsalis also received a nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berklee alumni are also well represented in the \ncategory of Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. Composer and Berklee\n alumnus Alan Silvestri \u201870 is nominated for Avengers: Endgame<\/em>, and Ramin Djawadi B.M. \u201898, composer, is nominated for Game of Thrones: Season 8<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris Galland B.M. \u201807 is nominated for Record of the Year for his work on Lizzo\u2019s smash hit \u201cTruth Hurts,\u201d\n and Josh Deguzman B.M. \u201815 is nominated for his engineering work on \nKhalid\u2019s \u201cTalk.\u201d Jeff \u201cGitty\u201d Gitelman B.M. \u201803 received a nomination \nfor Album of the Year for his work on H.E.R.\u2019sI Used to Know Her<\/em>. Alumnus Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah B.M. \u201804 is nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for his album Ancestral Recall<\/em>. In the Best Latin Jazz Album category, Grammy winner John Patitucci, Berklee visiting scholar in performance studies, and alumnus Chico Pinheiro B.M. ’82 received nominations for Sorte!: Music by John Finbury<\/em>; and alumnus Miguel Zen\u00f3n B.M. \u201898 received a nomination for Sonero: The Music of Ismael Rivera<\/em>.\n The indie rock band Big Thief, which includes Berklee alumni Adrianne \nLenker B.M. \u201812, Buck Meek B.M. \u201810, and James Krivchenia B.M. \u201814, and \ntheir producer Andrew Sarlo ’11 received a nomination for Best \nAlternative Music Album for their record U.F.O.F<\/em>. \nBerklee alumna Courtney Powers B.M. ’07, music director at South \nPhiladelphia High School, was also named one of the 25 semi-finalists \nfor the 2020 Grammy Music Educator Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 62nd annual Grammy Awards will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, January 26, 2020, and will be broadcast on CBS at 8:00 p.m. EST.  <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
